East Kent Backgammon Tournament – 27th July 2024

 

It was a beautiful sunny day for our summer tournament at the Canterbury Golf Club.
A number of the players made the most of the weather and played outside with a great back drop of the golf course.

The top 8 players went through to the mains knockout with only Anna Price winning all of her main matches. Sadly for Anna it wasn’t her day again ( although she did pick up her share of the Gold & Platinum side pools)

Rustem Mustafa from Peckam was on form with both his play, charm & wit and was hoping for a win. But he was no match in the semi final for our Canterbury cutie Jay Hayter who took a 5:0 win.

Alan Berlyn took the other finalist position after a 5:3 win against Jon Meyer.

Jay Hayter and Alan Berlyn had a great play off in the final with just a few players left to watch it. 
It was getting rather tense for the spectators towards the end with Jay playing with only 19 seconds left on the clock on the crawford game and eventually down to 10 seconds on the post crawford. Although this didn’t seem to worry Jay.

Alan Berlyn took the lead and won 5:3 

In the consolation knockout Steve Bibby won against Gary Brooker

A massive thanks from me to Matthew Guy for his help in running the tournament today.

This tournament was dedicated to our founder of the club Bob Bruce who we sadly lost this year.
Without Bob the club would never have been the success it is today and we all truly miss his passion for the game, his humour and most of all a great friend. Rest in peace Bobby Boy…
